芸術の歴史には、画期的な劇場が数多く存在する。 もちろん、スタニスラフスキーのモスクワ芸術座、グループ劇場、ステッペンウルフ・シアター・カンパニー、イングマール・ベルイマンのドラマティスト・スタジオなどが思い浮かぶ。
そして、日本では「Prayers Studio」がある。

2022年に、私は自身が脚本と監督を務めた長編映画『POEM』を撮りました。

その中で、この劇団の俳優数名の出演がありました。彼らの多次元的で絶妙な演技に驚かされました。
主演の妻鹿有利花は、公開後6週間で映画祭で3つの主演女優賞を受賞しました。 渡部朋彦は主演男優賞2回、蔭山恵美は助演女優賞を受賞しており、どれも納得のいくものでした。

映画祭の審査員も感心していましたが、私が監督としても感心したのは、この俳優たちの演技のリアルさと複雑さです。 私はこれまで世界中の俳優と仕事をしてきましたが、彼らの演技は、これまで仕事をした中で最も優れたものでした。

彼らと話していると、彼らは「Prayers Studio」に由来する演技への特別な訓練とアプローチを持っていることがわかりました。 俳優を成長させるための大きなメソッドです。 演技の芸術と技術に対する様々なアプローチがある今日、その多くは良いものですが、Prayers Studioの俳優が到達できる演技の深さを証明するものとして、これは最高のものの一つです。

There are many groundbreaking theaters in the history of the arts. Of course, Stanislavski’s Moscow’s Art theater, The Group Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Ingmar Bergman’s The Dramatist Studio come to mind. And in Japan, there is the Prayers Studio.

This past year, I wrote and directed a feature film POEM. I wrote the parts for some of the actors in this theater group. I was astonished by the multidimensional, exquisite performances of the cast. Arika Mega, who played the lead in the film, won 3 Best Actresses awards within 6 weeks of the film’s release in the film festival circuit. Tomohiko Watanabe won 2 Best Actor awards, Megumi Kageyama won a Best Supporting Actress Award, all well deserved.

What impressed the festival judges, and what impressed me as a director, was the realism and complexity of these actors performances. I have worked with actors all over the world, and these artists were among the best I had ever had the privilege to work with.

In chatting with the actors, I found they have a specific training and approach to acting that originated with the Prayers Studio. This is a major method in the development of the actor. In this day and age with such varied approaches to the art and skill of acting, many of them good, this is one of the best by evidence of the depth of performance the Prayers Studio actors are able to reach.

If you are a young actor, and you have the opportunity to study or perform with the Prayers Studio, it will be one of the most important artistic growth experiences you will have in your career. You will be among true masters of the art.
